Discarding a Blood Bag
Discarding a Blood Unit is the process of disposing of a Blood Unit, ending the tracked cold chain.

Many Blood Banks require that blood is returned to them when damaged or expired. Check with your Blood Program Manager or Blood Bank for more information.
Discarding
"Discarding" is the process of recording that a blood unit has been discarded. This event will end the cold chain for the blood unit.
The return event will prompt the user to record the following information:
- Name of the Blood Bank that the blood unit is being returned to.
- Name of the person who the blood unit was handed to.
- Justification for why the blood unit is being returned.
- An optional note, unless "other" is selected as the justification.
This event will end the unit's cold chain. While it is possible to continue to add events to this unit, users will have to confirm that the unit is still within the cold chain.
