Donor Identification Number

The Donor identification number is a unique identifier for each blood unit. This number is used to track the unit throughout its lifecycle, from collection to transfusion. It is important to ensure that this number is entered correctly, as it is used to link the unit to the donor's medical history and any testing that has been performed on the unit.

The DIN is the first 15 characters of the barcode, including the two smaller rotated characters.

Donor Identification Number - Check Character

In order to ensure that the DIN is entered correctly, it should be scanned with a barcode reader or the AI scanner. If it is manually entered, or if a Blood Unit Is manually selected from the Unit List, a Check Character must be typed in.

Entering the check character ensures that the correct Blood Bag is entered, and there were typos while entering the DIN.

Be aware that the Check Character is not stored within BloodCOMM. The only place to find the correct check character is on the physical Bag Label.
